What Does ‘Received’ Mean On Snapchat?

When you get a message from someone on Snapchat you may notice that under their name there is a message saying “Received”.

This can mean a number of different things depending on the color of the icon next to it.

Blue Received Meaning

Blue icons are used to refer to a text message, the message does not contain a video, image or audio, it is just text.

If you can see the Blue received message under someone’s name and it is not filled in then this means that you have read the message but have not responded.

If the blue received message is filled in then this means you have received the message but not yet read it.

Purple Received Meaning

Red icons are used to refer to snaps that contain either video or an audio clip.

If you can see the purple received message under someone’s name and it is not filled in then this means that you have seen the snap but have not responded.

If the red received message is filled in then this means you have received the snap but haven’t viewed it yet.

Red Received Meaning

Red icons are used to refer to snaps that contain images.

If you can see the red received message under someone’s name and it is not filled in then this means that you have seen the snap but have not responded.

If the red received message is filled in then this means you have received the snap but not yet viewed it.

Why Does It Say “Received” For A New Contact

If you’ve recently added someone and haven’t yet sent them any messages then normally it should just say “Tap to chat” under their name.

However in some cases you may see that it says “Received” there instead.

This usually happens if you re-add someone who you have previously deleted from your friends’ list.

They sent you a message to which you didn’t reply, and you then removed them from your friend list.

When you re-add them Snapchat carries on from where you left off with the “Received” message being shown.
